Electrical/Controls Engineering Intern

Rivan Industries (Rivan.com) is a synthetic fuel company designed to decarbonise heavy industry. We aim to make synthetic fuel cheaper than fossil fuels and sustain life on earth by keeping the CO2 locked underground.

We design and manufacture modular synthetic fuel plants consisting of a DAC system, an Alkaline Electrolyser, and a Sabatier Reactor, whilst vertically integrating with off-grid DC solar and the European gas-grid. Here’s our entire business plan. We’ve recently deployed the UK’s largest synthetic fuel plant and are planning to 1000x this scale in the next 2 years.

We build almost everything in-house, meaning getting our systems up and running fast is critical to our timelines. We’re looking for someone to support the step when our hardware is ready and needs to be connected to our power system and controls to bring it to life. This will include some hardware, debugging, and general ingenuity to reduce the time our engineers are bottlenecked by not having a system humming away.

The role:

  • Install, configure, and debug sensors/actuators for DAC/Electrolyser/Reactor pilots
  • Build evaluation/test rigs
  • Integrate and commission electrical & controls cabinets
  • Work with process/mech/EE teams to quickly resolve field issues

Core skills:

  • Industrial control & comms fundamentals
  • 4–20 mA / 0–10 V analogue signalling
  • Electrical noise sources, effects, and mitigation methods
  • Read, analyse, and implement schematics, wiring, and network topologies
  • Field device configuration and debugging
  • Hands-on panel wiring, crimping, and field terminations

Preferable skills:

  • IEC 61131-3 (ST/LD/FBD)
  • Modbus (RTU/TCP), CAN bus, OPC UA, TCP/IP, RS-485
  • Python 3
  • Data visualisation & analysis
  • SCADA/Historian basics (trending, alarms, tags)
  • Version control (Git) & simple CI/issue tracking
  • Linux fundamentals & networking tools (ssh/ping/traceroute)

Specifics:

  • £30-40k Salary depending on experience
  • Available immediately on a full-time/ part-time basis
  • In-person work at our HQ in Bermondsey, South London
  • Flexible time off
